Phillips Helps Summer Park and Recreation

Kids will have more outdoor fun at Summer Park and Recreation this summer with the help of Julie Phillips of Onawa, working as a summer intern for the "Got 2 Move" project for kids' health.

Kids are encouraged to meet Julie and take part in new activities and games Monday through Friday from now thru July 24 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Gaukel Park.

Julie, the daughter of Vince and Ann Phillips of Onawa, is a West Monona High School graduate and an Iowa State University sophomore majoring in child adult and family services. She is guiding kids in using the new games and activities in the park's free, six–week recreation program along with Jan Cole, summer recreational director.

"I'm helping kids learn how to play with our new equipment, the disc golf course, fun tunnel, tetherball and more," Julie says. "Kids also will learn about healthy eating and enjoy the park's arts and crafts sessions and indoor games."

Funds for the college intern position have come from the Wellmark Foundation, which awarded funds to Burgess Health Center to help keep kids healthier with fitness activities and healthy eating. New park equipment is one of many strategies developed with partners in Monona County's new health coalition.
