Onawa Park Hosts July 1 Opening of Disc Golf Course

The public is invited to the grand opening of the new, nine-hole disc golf course in Onawa Wednesday, July 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Gaukel Park where a free clinic with experts will offer tips on how to play.

Disc golf course authorities Bill Hulbert and Chris Oien of Omaha, members of the Professional Disc Golf Association, will offer hands-on instruction on how disc golf is similar to traditional "ball" golf. Refreshments will be served.

Kids and adults can bring their own discs or check out all new special discs from the Onawa Community Center the day of the grand opening. Disc golf, which requires players to throw plastic flying discs at targets above-ground, follows many of the rules of traditional golf.

Julie Phillips, a summer intern for Onawa parks and recreation, will play disc golf with kids during afternoon park programs through July 24.

The no-cost golf course was recently installed at Gaukel Park using funds from the "Got 2 Move" project of Burgess Health Center and the Wellmark Foundation. The goal of the course and the grant project is to get kids to move more and enjoy healthier physical activity.

The Onawa Community Center is open weekdays until 9 p.m. To learn more about checking out discs, call the center at 712-433-2201.
