Wear Pink Program Showcases Surgeon and Booths

During the "Wear Pink" dessert reception at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Onawa Community Center Burgess Health Center guests also will be able to view special booths along with meeting breast cancer surgeon Dr. Shawna Willey.

The reception and 7:30 p.m. program that follows it, "Wear Pink" The Latest on Breast Cancer," are free to the public. Free child care will be provided to interested participants.

Booths will include a display of dolls hand crafted by Dr. Mary,Cobb Mountain Handbags from Onawa and pink j ewelry and gifts from “Seasons of the Heart” in Moorhead.

There also will be Burgess information on digital mammography, the oncology clinic, education and children's health; Beyond Pink breast cancer recovery products; Susan G. Komen for the Cure; June E. Nylen Cancer Center; Monona County Public Health and more.

Willey, a native of the Whiting/Onawa area, is a surgeon in Washington D.C. and immediate past-president of The American Society of Breast Surgeons. A recognized leader in breast cancer surgery, she will also address healthcare professionals the next day. Her programs are sponsored by Burgess.

"We're also offering a fun focal point to help welcome Dr. Willey to Onawa Whiting area," adds Jean Pekarek of Burgess, event organizer. "We're planning a chocolate fountain with fresh fruits and other items to drizzle with chocolate along with flavored coffees and punch."

Willey, the daughter of Vincent and the late Mavis Willey of Whiting, an active surgeon specializing in breast disease, is director of the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Cancer Center. She also is an associate professor in the university's department of surgery.
