Dr. Donald B. Wender is an oncologist in Sioux City, Iowa, and is affiliated with Burgess Health Center. Dr. Wender has seen almost everything in his cancer career, including the multiple decades he has practiced in Siouxland. But he is most proud of being involved in some first studies and very early clinical research trials for colon, breast, and lung cancer. Dr. Wender was actually one of the first medical oncologists to use new drugs with ovarian and renal cancers. He truly has been on the forefront of advancing cancer treatments. While earning his Ph.D., Dr. Wender did not want to stay in lab research and knew he’d continue with his medical degree. He was drawn to oncology because of how challenging it was, but also how it continued to change. He has been married for nearly 45 years and has 6 grown children from ages 40 to 23.He received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years.
Dr. Wender is a member of the American College of Physicians, the Iowa Oncology Society, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He currently serves as principal investigator for research with participation in the Alliance Clinical Research Group sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.
